OUTREACH

Winter 2021

♦  Ece extends the remote penpal outreach program to 20 students of ages between 9-18. 

♦ Leite is a speaker for the “Professional development in Materials Science series of talks, as part of the Materials Outreach Corporation - an MSE/UC Davis undergraduate organization. 

Fall 2020

♦  Ece starts a remote one-to-one STEM-based penpal outreach program for 11 students of ages between 9-15 in Istanbul, Turkey.

♦  Meghna presents a talk for the STEM Outreach Collective to 30 Intro to Engineering students in 12th grade at East Palo Alto Academy High School in Palo Alto, CA.

♦  Meghna presents a talk for the STEM Outreach Collective to 40 science students at James Denman Middle School in San Francisco, CA.

Fall 2017
♦  Leite, Zack, Natalie and Kevin present the talk “What is Materials Science? What are the possible career paths?” to 60 AP Physics 2 students from 11th grade at Eleanor Roosevelt High School, in Prince George’s County.

 

Summer 2017
♦  Leite gives a presentation to 34 high schoolers through the Women in Engineering program at UMD. They talked about what is materials science and possible career paths in STEM.
♦  Amida Koroma, from Eleanor Roosevelt High School, joins the LeiteLab for a summer internship on plamonics.

 

Fall 2016
♦  Leite gives a lab tour to freshmen students from the Women in Engineering Program at UMD.

♦  Anna Park, from Eleanor Roosevelt High School, joins the LeiteLab for a one-year academic internship on perovskite solar cells.

 

Summer 2016
♦  Anusha Dixit, from Poolesville High School, joins the LeiteLab for a summer internship on structural properties of metals.
♦  Leite presents a seminar about functional imaging of photovoltaics, including all the relevant contributions of the UG alumni and current students in the group, to the TREND REU/NSF program at UMD.
♦  Leite presents the talk “What is Materials Science?” to AP Physics2 students from 11th grade at Eleanor Roosevelt High School, in Prince George’s County.

 

Fall 2015
♦  Brazil Embassy – Science without Borders: round table about career opportunities in Academia
♦  UMD Women in Engineering – Lab tour for freshmen female students.

Summer 2015
♦  Lecture to 30 female high scholars (rising juniors and seniors) about “MSE and career paths“. (UMD Women in Engineering – Exploring Engineering at UMD)

 

Spring 2015
♦ Visit/lecture to Eleanor Roosevelt High School students from AP Physics1, including experiment with solar cells.
♦ UMD Women in Engineering – dinner + round table about career paths with undergraduate  students.
